In a rushed attempt to beat the West in creating a COVID-19 vaccine the Gamaleya Research Institute in Moscow created Sputnik V without consideration to production and distribution. As a result, the vaccine, which is a viral vector-based vaccine, is struggling to deliver as promised. The Sputnik V consists of two human adenoviral vectors, Ad26 and Ad5. But unlike other vector-based vaccines like the Johnson & Johnson or AstraZeneca vaccines, which only use one vector administered once or twice, the Sputnik V requires two different vectors to fully inoculate someone. Production of the second vector has been marred by difficulties. Corruption, production difficulties, and lack of raw material has made production of the Sputnik V almost impossible. Something which is also reflected in the fact that hardly any of the 1 billion doses sold abroad have been exported to foreign customers.

The Russian government’s recent push for Russians to become vaccinated considering these critical production problems is laughable. Asking Russians to get vaccinated with a vaccine that isn’t even fully available risks making many Russians vulnerable. Without the ability of becoming fully inoculated, and without the opportunity to mix the first dose of Sputnik V with other vector-based vaccines Russian’s risk putting themselves at risk by starting an inoculation process that cannot be completed.
